History
THOR COLLEGE was established in 1980, and
is situated on the 4th Line of Innisfil, minutes from Thornton and Cookstown.
Thor College is recognized by the Ministry of Education and uses the Ontario
curriculum as the basis for our curriculum. We are a traditional, independent,
co-educational facility, that strives to create a positive academic setting
to educate students from Pre-Kindergarten to University entrance level
Grade 12.
Thor College was established by W.H. and Ingrid Madden, educators and
concerned parents who recognized that education was moving away from the
three R’s, the basics of education; Reading, writing, and arithmetic.
These became the foundation for our school’s academic learning environment
with a strong emphasis on phonics and grammar.
We strive for academic excellence, which we believe is attained through
small classes, individualized programming, regular homework, and the development
of good study habits, enthusiastic and caring teachers, and regular communication
with parents. To achieve this goal we teach phonics, grammar, spelling,
and math skills in a well-balanced curriculum that includes athletics
and the arts. We counsel our students on note taking, study skills and
preparation for the writing of examinations.
These approaches, we believe, promote self-discipline and a systematic
approach to learning as well as other tasks. Further, our small class
size and routine assessment of progress improves self-esteem and stimulates
students to achieve at a more advanced level of education.
We believe that a good work ethic and perseverance will lead to success
not only in education, but also in life. This belief is instilled in our
students and is the school motto:
DILIGENTIA SUCCESSUM CREAT - DILIGENCE CREATES SUCCESS.
Yours truly,
W.H. Madden, BA, BPHE, BEd, (U of T)
